QuadProxy Starter

QWebEngineView proxy authentication

Why a Qt proxy can work outside WebEngine but fail in QWebEngineView.

Qt WebEngine is Chromium-backed. A request through ordinary Qt networking can prove that your proxy credentials are valid, but it does not prove that the browser path is using that proxy or answering WebEngine proxy-auth challenges.

The usual failure path

  1. A developer verifies the proxy with a non-WebEngine HTTP request.
  2. QApplication or a WebEngine object already exists.
  3. The application proxy is set too late, or credentials are assumed to flow through the wrong callback.
  4. QWebEngineView shows a blank page, loadFinished(False), or the direct public IP instead of the proxy IP.

The reliable diagnostic sequence

  1. Use an authenticated HTTP proxy. QuadProxy v1.0 does not include or configure SOCKS proxy subscriptions.
  2. Build proxy settings from environment variables or another secret-safe source.
  3. Call QNetworkProxy.setApplicationProxy(proxy) before creating QApplication and before any WebEngine object exists.
  4. Connect QWebEnginePage.proxyAuthenticationRequired on the page that will load the target.
  5. Load a public-IP endpoint through the WebEngine path and compare direct IP against browser-visible proxy IP.
  6. Only load the target URL after reachability, authentication, Qt WebEngine initialization, and public-IP verification pass.
proxy_config = ProxyConfig(
    host=os.environ["PROXY_HOST"],
    port=int(os.environ["PROXY_PORT"]),
    user=os.environ["PROXY_USER"],
    password=os.environ["PROXY_PASSWORD"],
)
configure_application_proxy(proxy_config)
app = QApplication(sys.argv)
view = QWebEngineView()
view.page().proxyAuthenticationRequired.connect(handle_proxy_auth)

Qt's own WebEngine docs describe that WebEngine forwards Qt proxy settings to Chromium and emits proxyAuthenticationRequired when proxy credentials are needed. The Qt for Python simple-browser example also subclasses WebEngine page/view objects to handle HTTP and proxy authentication.

What QuadProxy adds

  1. PyQt5/PyQt6 source code with the setup order already wired.
  2. Credential callback handling without logging proxy passwords.
  3. quadproxy doctor diagnostics that separate install, reachability, authentication, public-IP, and target-load failures.
  4. Examples and troubleshooting docs shipped as a downloadable source package.

QuadProxy is not a proxy provider. Bring your own authenticated HTTP proxy account.

Paid kit contents

  1. PyQt5 and PyQt6 starter examples for the supported authenticated HTTP proxy path.
  2. quadproxy doctor diagnostics for install, proxy reachability, authentication, WebEngine initialization, and public-IP verification.
  3. Troubleshooting docs, redacted support bundle helpers, instant Stripe delivery, and a 30-day support/refund path.

Buy only if you already have an authenticated HTTP proxy account and want packaged source, diagnostics, and support instead of wiring this from scratch. QNetworkProxy works but WebEngine ignores proxy? • Back to the product page
